Friends of Mine

Friends of Mine is one of those place’s that I’d always driven past (probably on my way to pilates) and admired, but never taken the initiative to actually visit. Occupying a large corner residence down the quiet end of Swan St in Richmond (some may consider it Burnley), café-goers enjoy the spacious, gumtree-shaded dining area that the footpath junction offers. The theme is bright and cheerful; old-school yellow shutters match the coffee mugs & saucers, which are the same perky yellow as the employee’s aprons. Indoor dining offers a bit more class, with exposed brick walls and proper white table cloths adorning the large dining area. A white-board out front offers not only the daily specials, but the option of hiring out the entire venue for the likes of 21st birthdays, hen’s nights, high teas and even wedding receptions.

A recent stalk of their instagram geo-tag told a story of beautifully presented dishes, a recent refresh of their menu and several healthy options to choose from. I also spied one of the biggest, greenest breakfast salads I’ve ever seen, so of course, this had to be properly investigated.

The F.O.M Supergreens Salad is without a doubt one of the most impressive breaky salads we’ve ever devoured. A blend of broccoli, kale, avocado, quinoa, edamame beans, almonds, feta and poached eggs and mint on grain toast (we opted for the GF Precinct, free of charge!), which was extremely generous in both portion size (there was roughly 2/3 of an avocado there) and flavour. The ‘Hung’ Over is another favourite (though not for anyone with a lactose intolerance)- cheesy bread (again, can be made gluten free for FREE) topped generously with smashed avocado, poached eggs and bacon. Simplicity at its best.

Other menu must-try’s are the Roasted Pumpkin Bruschetta (on five grain toast with spiced chick peas, feta, poached eggs, coriander and tahini yoghurt) and the Shakshuka (eggs gently poached in a tomato base, onions and house warmed turkish bread), both of which can be made gluten free on request. If you’re after something sweet, The Wild orange and coconut granola (gluten free) with passionfruit yoghurt, bananas and blueberries is our pick of the bunch. The drinks list is equally as impressive- we were delighted to see the combination of Almond Milk Co almond milk and All Press coffee on the menu, alongside an impressive Larsen & Thompson tea selection. Smoothies, cold-pressed juices and milkshakes are also available.

Friends of Mine is café that I wish was located in my own neighbourhood (though I’m sure my wallet is relieved). The staff are beyond lovely (checking on us multiple times and genuinely interest in engaging in conversation) and the lure of an impressively healthy/massive menu is reason for a return visit soon.
