A few minutes with Ellie Bullen in the lead up to Fitness Show Melbourne

It’s that time of year again. Spring is well underway, daylight savings has occurred, and the warm balmy days of Summer we’ve been waiting for are nearing. Time to come out of our Winter cocoons and get motivated to get fit for the season ahead! 

Luckily enough for us Melbournians, the Fitness Show, otherwise known as the most inspiring event on the Victorian fitness calendar is also fast approaching. It is on at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from October 13 – 15 and we don’t know how to express our excitement for this event that features the latest health and fitness trends where you get to meet like-minded professionals and enthusiasts. (The show is also heading to Brisbane later in October, and Sydney next year).

Think new products and equipment for trial, fun exercise classes with fitness icon Ashy Bines, healthy cooking classes, and an informative and inspirational panel discussion What Should I Eat? hosted by industry experts Michelle Bridges, Ellie Bullen, Tim Robards and David Gillespie.

We’ve been lucky enough to have been able to interview Bali-based nutritionist and dietitian Ellie Bullen (@elsas_wholesomelife) in the lead up to the show. With a new cookbook under her belt (that will make you salivate), we cannot wait to hear her health and fitness tips!

1. Where has been your favourite place to eat in Melbourne so far?
(With our endless, over-flowing supply of quality cafes and restaurants, Ellie hasn't decided and will be back to us on this...)

2. What is your all time favourite dish? 
My favourite dish is my pumpkin and soba noodle salad! It's just so simple and delicious.

3. What foods would you recommend people should eat more of to boost energy and mood? 
Well bananas are a great energy snack and they're also supposed to boost your mood through their tryptophan content! 

4. What was the catalyst that inspired/motivated you to decide to go into the nutrition/dietetics field and what do you love most about it?
I had always been interested in health but I think my time away from home in the army inspired me most. I realised how much I appreciated having my own foods that I loved to cook and eat around me and began cooking all my own meals and reading some information on the internet and magazines (not the most credible stuff but definitely got me interested!).

5. A health tip for your followers:
My biggest health tip is to eat more plants. That way you are getting more nutrients in and you'll likely eat less of something thats not particularly good for you.

6. A Bali travel tip for our followers:
Get out of the touristy areas such as Kuta, Legian and Seminyak and head towards Canggu or Ubud. So many great places to eat around there.

7. How do you start your day each day?
I usually have a coffee, a green drink (greens powder and water) and head to the gym, followed by a smoothie back at home. 

8. What is your favourite form of exercise and how do you stay fit?
My favourite is running. At the moment I'm injured so I haven't been able to run which is so devastating for me because I love it so much.

9. What motivates you to do what you do? 
I think it's just knowing how good I feel and knowing that I can help others feel the same way. I love receiving messages from people telling me they've been cooking from my cookbook and love the recipes, this makes me so excited! 

10. Something people may not know about you.... 
That I have an identical twin sister :)
